Dyscalculia or just struggling with maths? Here's how to tell the difference

Both look like tears over homework. The pattern underneath tells a very different story.

The truth is that most children who struggle with maths do not have dyscalculia. But some do, and knowing the difference changes what kind of help actually works.


What dyscalculia actually is

Dyscalculia is a specific learning difficulty that affects a person's ability to understand numbers and number relationships. It's sometimes described as "dyslexia for maths," though the comparison is imperfect. Children with dyscalculia don't just find maths hard — their brains process numerical information differently, in a way that persists even with good teaching and consistent practice.

This matters because it's relatively rare. Most estimates put dyscalculia at around 3–7% of the population, similar to dyslexia. The vast majority of children who struggle with maths — including children who struggle badly — do not have it. Far more common are foundational gaps: missed concepts from an earlier grade or term that never got revisited, quietly making every subsequent topic harder to grasp.

Because both look similar on the surface — avoidance, low marks, tears over homework — it helps to look at the pattern underneath rather than just the outcome.

  • Struggles similarly with everyday tasks like handling money or judging distances

No single sign confirms dyscalculia on its own. What matters is the pattern: persistence across many different types of number tasks, and a lack of progress despite genuine, sustained effort.


What to do either way

Here's the reassuring part: the first steps look similar regardless of which one you're dealing with.

If you suspect dyscalculia specifically, the right move is a formal assessment with an educational psychologist. In South Africa, this can usually be arranged through your child's school — many have access to a school psychologist or can refer you — or privately through the South African Association of Educational Psychologists. An assessment gives you clarity and, if needed, opens the door to formal accommodations at school, like extra time in tests.

Whether it's a gap or a genuine learning difficulty, consistent, targeted practice is never wasted effort.

But while you wait for that process, or if it turns out your child doesn't need it, targeted practice is the single most useful thing you can do. If your child's struggle is narrow, responds to practice, and eventually clicks, you're very likely looking at a gap rather than a learning difficulty — and that's genuinely good news, because gaps are fixable with time and the right kind of practice.
