How to help your child master times tables — without the flashcard tears
Nightly flashcard battles aren't a sign your child can't do maths. They're usually a sign of how the facts are being practised.
It's 6pm. The flashcards are out. Your child gets "7 x 8" right on Monday and completely blank on it by Thursday. Voices rise, someone cries — and it's not always the child. If times tables have turned into a nightly battle in your house, you're far from alone.
Times tables (or "maths facts," as they're often called) trip up more South African families than almost any other part of primary school maths. The good news is that the problem is rarely about effort or intelligence. It's usually about how the facts are being practised — and that's something you can fix without another round of tears at the kitchen table.
Why times tables still matter so much
It's tempting to wonder whether times tables even matter in a world of calculators and phones. They do — enormously. Multiplication facts are the building blocks underneath almost everything that comes next in the CAPS curriculum: long division, fractions, ratios, percentages, and eventually algebra all lean on a child being able to recall multiplication facts quickly, without having to work them out from scratch each time.

This is why fluency with times tables — usually expected up to the 12x table by the end of Grade 4, and firmly consolidated by Grade 5 and 6 — is worth getting right. Why flashcard drilling often backfires
