Is a maths app actually good screen time? What parents should know
Not all screen time is the same. Here's how to tell whether an app is building real maths skills — or just keeping your child quiet.
Your child asks for "just ten more minutes" on their tablet, and you hesitate. Is this the good kind of screen time — the kind that's actually helping them learn — or just another way to zone out? If your child is using a maths app, you've probably asked yourself this question more than once.
It's a fair worry. Most advice about screen time treats all screens the same, lumping educational apps in with games and video feeds. But that's not a useful way to think about it. The real question isn't how many minutes your child spends looking at a screen — it's what's actually happening during those minutes.
Why "screen time" is the wrong question
Paediatric and education researchers have moved away from blanket screen time limits for exactly this reason: a child mindlessly scrolling short videos and a child working through targeted maths problems are doing completely different things, even though both involve a screen.
The more useful distinction is between passive and active screen time. Passive screen time is consumption — watching, scrolling, being entertained. Active screen time requires the child to think, respond, make decisions, and get feedback. A well-designed maths app sits firmly in the active category: your child reads a problem, works out an answer, submits it, and immediately learns whether they got it right.
That feedback loop is the part that matters most. It's the same reason a maths worksheet marked by a teacher the next day is less effective than one where a child finds out immediately whether they're on the right track. Instant feedback lets a child correct a misunderstanding before it hardens into a habit.
What separates a good maths app from a time-filler
Not every app that calls itself "educational" delivers real learning. Before deciding an app is worth your child's time, it's worth checking it against a few basics.
- It adapts to your child, rather than serving the same generic questions to every user regardless of ability or grade.
- It tracks performance over time and can show you, in plain terms, where your child is strong and where they're struggling.
- It's aligned to what your child is actually being taught — in South Africa, that means CAPS-aligned content for the right grade and term.
- It lets a child go back and revisit earlier work when a gap shows up, instead of pushing them forward regardless of readiness.
- Progress is visible and motivating, not just a stream of right-or-wrong marks with no sense of improvement.
If an app can't do most of these things, it's probably closer to a digital worksheet than a genuine learning tool — not necessarily harmful, but not doing much heavy lifting either.
