The gap isn't ability — it's belief
Girls and boys generally start school performing similarly in maths. What tends to diverge over time isn't their mark, but their confidence in that mark. A girl who gets 75% might describe herself as "not good at maths." A boy with the same score is far more likely to shrug it off as an off day.
This matters more than it sounds like it should. Confidence shapes effort, and effort shapes results. A child who believes she can improve keeps practising through the hard parts. What parents can do at home
The good news is that confidence responds to the same thing ability does: consistent, low-pressure practice with visible progress.
- Praise the process, not just the answer. "You worked through that carefully" builds a different self-image than "You're so clever," which can make mistakes feel like proof she isn't.
- Watch your own language around maths. Even lighthearted "I was terrible at maths" comments get absorbed as evidence that struggling means you're simply not built for it.
- Give her a private space to get things wrong. Practising away from a classroom audience — and away from a sibling watching — removes the social risk from making mistakes.
- Track progress together, not just marks. Seeing "you've improved on fractions this month" is more motivating than a single test score ever will be.
- Keep her in the room for maths and science conversations. Casual encouragement toward these subjects at home has a real effect on which subjects she chooses to stick with later.
